Plant color basics

What is plant-based color?

Color that comes only from plant pigments — henna, indigo, cassia and botanical infusions — instead of synthetic dye. There is no ammonia, no peroxide and no PPD. The pigment sits on the hair and coats it, so hair usually feels thicker after a few applications.

What is the difference between henna, cassia and indigo?

Henna (Lawsonia inermis) gives copper tones. Cassia (Cassia obovata), sometimes called neutral henna, adds shine and body with very little color. Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) gives cool, dark tones and is blended with henna for browns and near-black.

Do you have a color chart?

No, and that is deliberate. Plants deposit pigment over the color you already have, so the same pouch gives a different result on every head. Our shade finder asks about your base and your gray hair and points you to the right blend.

Does it lighten hair?

Never. Plant color only adds pigment. If you want to go lighter than your natural base, plant color cannot do it.

Results and gray hair

What color will I get?

It depends on your starting shade, your hair's porosity, how much gray you have, any previous chemical treatment and how long you leave the paste on. On dark hair, henna reads as a warm reflection in the light rather than a change of color.

Does it cover gray?

It tints gray and turns it into highlights. With scattered grays, one application is enough and the brighter tone settles after two or three washes. With more than half gray, use the double-coloring method below.

What is double coloring?

Two passes in the same session, for dark hair with more than 50% gray. First a henna blend, then Indigo with Henna on top. Without the second pass the grays come out copper instead of brown.

Will I get a root line?

No. Plant color fades gradually and evenly across the whole length, so there is no hard regrowth line like with synthetic dye.

Applying it

How much do I need?

Each pouch holds 130 g of plant powder. Medium-length hair usually takes one pouch; thick or long hair, one and a half to two. The dose calculator on our site works it out from your length, density and whether you are doing roots or the full length.

Why add oil to the mix?

Plants are astringent. Oil keeps hair hydrated and helps the pigment settle. About three tablespoons per preparation.

How often can I apply it?

As often as you like — plant color does not damage hair. Once a month is the usual rhythm.

I have leftover paste. Can I keep it?

Freeze it for up to a month. Kept at room temperature it loses its coloring power.

Can I use it on dyed hair?

If your dye had no ammonia, you can apply it straight away. If it had ammonia, wait about two weeks. On bleached or highlighted hair the result is unpredictable and usually much more intense, so test on a hidden strand first.

Can I go back to synthetic dye afterwards?

Yes. Our plant color is pure plant powder with no metallic salts, so it does not react with dye. Tell your colorist you have been using plant color, and have them do a strand test.

Will it stain the pool?

No. Once the color has set and you have rinsed, you can swim without turning the water.

Safety and ingredients

Do I need a patch test?

Yes, 48 hours before every application, even if you have used the product before. Full instructions are on our Plant Color and Patch Test Notice.

Can I use it while pregnant, or on a child?

Our blends are pure plant powder with nothing added, and many people use them at both stages. We are not doctors, so check with your physician or your child's pediatrician first.

What is in the products?

Every product lists its full ingredients on the pouch and on its page. The formulas use organic or wild-harvested plants.

Do you test on animals?

No. It goes against everything the brand stands for.

What about the packaging?

Recyclable PET for oils and cosmetics, and paper or plant-based cellophane for the rest.

Can I use the hair color on my skin?

No. Our products are cosmetics for hair and scalp only, and that is how they are tested and labeled.
